Hula Hooping: A great way to get active for parents & kids

Hula hooping is enjoying a comeback! Cheap and fun, hula hooping is a great way for kids and parents to get active.

Hula hoops have been used through the ages as toys and in some cultures for religious ceremonies.

They were originally made from bamboo, rattan, or stiff grasses. The plastic hoop that we recognise today was first manufactured in America in the 1950s. The popularity of hooping spread and at one point 50,000 hoops were being manufactured per day.

Nowadays, hula hooping competitions are becoming more and more popular – there is even a world championship!

Hoops can be bought online and in toy shops. Hoops for adults tend to be heavier and bigger –  this makes them easier to use, which means you can keep going for longer.

The lighter hoops –  usually used by kids, require a little more skill to master and need more effort to keep them going. Sport hoops are weighted hoops that are used as part of a fitness routine.

Make sure that the hoop you buy is the right size for you. When the hoop is placed on the floor it should come up to between your hip and chest.

Depending on how long you keep the hoop going, hula hooping can be great as part of an aerobic workout. Hooping is great fun and it can also improve your co ordination and balance.

So why not grab a hoop for yourself and the kids and enjoying hula hooping together?
